Review aus der aktuellen Ausgabe des Downbeat-Magazine:

BY BOBBY REED
Ensemble FisFüz & Gianluigi Trovesi, Papillons (HGBS Records)
For the hypnotic album Papillons, Italian clarinet virtuoso Gianluigi Trovesi teamed up with the Germany-based trio Ensemble FisFüz to create a mixture of jazz and world music. To my ears, the key ingredient to this charming album is its unusual instrumentation. All the players on the disc have tremendous chops, and it’s a memorable treat to hear a quartet with two clarinets. Trovesi plays alto clarinet and E-flat clarinet here, while Annette Maye complements him on clarinet and bass clarinet. The woodwind duo segments are often mesmerizing, and the clarinetists are joined by fleet-fingered acoustic guitarist Gürkan Balkan (who also plays oud) and percussionist Murat Coşkun, whose exotic setup includes frame drums, cajon, darbuka, hang, gatam and riq. Trovesi’s composition “Her Cab” features some terrific, Dixieland-flavored counterpoint playing by two clarinets, followed by a jaunty, harmonized line. On his composition “Carpinese,” the Italian master dips into his bag of techniques to offer slap-tonguing, breath effects, pops and squeaks that give texture to a lovely melody unspooled on alto clarinet. Trovesi—who has previously collaborated with accordionist Gianni Coscia and trumpeter Paolo Fresu—has found great partners in Ensemble FisFüz. This program consists of 11 original compositions (including four by Coşkun), and it concludes with an fine arrangement of the traditional tune “Ose Shalom.” This album’s mixture of swing, klezmer, folk, classical and world music appeals equally to a listener’s intellect (“Hmm, that’s an intriguing instrumental combination”) and feet (“Let’s dance!”).
